Te Pākau Maru (The Sheltering Place) is currently under construction and comprises 63 terraced homes with a diverse mix of one, two, three, and four-bedroom high-quality homes to meet a variety of housing needs, located on the scenic east coast beach of New Brighton in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Enabled by Christchurch City Council and Christchurch’s economic development agency, ChristchurchNZ, Te Pākau Maru was developed by Kāinga Maha—from land acquisition through to delivery—funded by Home Capital Partners, and built by Home Construction. ChristchurchNZ selected Kāinga Maha to lead the development in 2022 through a competitive expressions of interest process. The project exemplifies the collective strength of the Home Foundation Group in addressing the housing needs of Kiwis through innovative solutions across the housing ecosystem.
Spanning approximately 7,000 square meters, Te Pākau Maru responds to both community needs and environmental imperatives. The project aligns with the New Brighton Regeneration Project's goal to revitalise the area by attracting more residents to the heart of New Brighton and sets a benchmark for sustainable living in New Zealand.
By offering affordable options for both homeownership and rental, the development helps ensure that a diverse group of residents can settle and thrive in New Brighton. Five homes will be available for Progressive Home Ownership via a grant from Ministry for Pacific Peoples and 37 homes will be Affordable Rentals (80% of market) through a scheme with Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. Home Foundation will retain ownership of a portion of the homes through Home Capital Partners and the remaining homes will be sold to market, prioritising first home buyers where possible.
